What to Look for When Buying a Used Freeform Saddle
Problems with Older Models
First and foremost I’d like to point out the older Freeform saddles prior to 2009 had issues with the foam. If the saddle is red underneath or blue this would indicate the timeframe of the weaker foam. We change the foam in late 2009 to a phenomenal foam that holds up and distributes weight.
I feel the value of the saddles being sold used on the market if they are red or blue underneath are $500 or less. I would look carefully through the gullet, to make sure it hasn’t split.

Preferred Girthing
Next I would like to point out the girthing. I would highly recommend you look for a used Freeform that has the billets swinging off the D rings, preferably the new girthing that has interchangeable billets. Remember it’s important that your saddle’s billets hit your horses girth groove.

Cutback is Best
I personally recommend the cutback whether your horse needs it or not. Fit then is not going to be an issue even if you have a mutton withered horse. It makes the saddle more versatile. As we all know we have horses that come in and out of our lives. You might as will have a saddle that’s going to work for all of them.

I’m looking at purchasing a used freeform that has fleece on the bottom. Is this a good/bad/otherwise thing? I read that there were issues with the foam on some models but I’m not sure what to think about fkeece .

sorry it seemed to take me 5 months to see this post. the fleece saddles are some of the very first. most likely it was the OLDER foam. again so sorry for the late reply.

And two years later, in the Uk I’ve just been offered the same! It’s in great condition exteriorly from the photos but must be quite old (it’s at least it’s 3rd home) as it only has the two hurrying points. I could live with that but I’m not sure about paying £500 GBP for the saddle if there might be degrading foam Under the sheepskin. I thought the sheepskin was instead of foam, however your above reply makes me think maybe there will be old foam in there too. Would be most grateful if you could advise. Wish I could afford a new one! Best, Susie
