After I retired, I was the trainer for the Madison Mounted Police for yet another four years (2010-14). My third police mount “HotShot” is an Arabian/Percheron X (yes, purposely bred!). He was IMPOSSIBLE to fit. We went through three or four saddles before I found the answer in 2003 – Freeform. We ordered and trialed the Freeform Classic and after one Wisconsin Badgers Football game – we were BOTH convinced – MY back felt great – HIS back felt great – no pressure points, no soreness! As you may know, police horses spend a lot of time standing around and walking around. The standing time can be very stressful on a horse’s back – even more than movement. HotShot is short-backed, with draft-width (non) withers and is slightly downhill, to boot – we were so relieved to find a saddle that met our needs! Since then, I have bought another Freeform (Western Barrel SN) for my Quarab and am in the process of ordering an Ultimate Trail, well, just because I want another one! I have a thriving natural horsemanship lessons and training “retirement” business, and many of my clients have also bought Freeforms (at my suggestion), to solve their problems with their hard-to-fit horses. The Madison Mounted Police have also now chosen Freeforms for their duty saddles – they ride full drafts and draft-crosses. HotShot and I have gone on to become the Wisconsin ACTHA champs in our in our Freeform Classic. These saddles WILL change your riding life and very possibly, your relationship with your horse!
